The Brazil-nut tree, also known as stop-the-chestnut or chestnut-amazon (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl., Lecythidaceae), is one of the most lush trees of the Amazon rainforest. Produces woody fruits (called hedgehogs), with 10 to 25 seeds (almonds) very tasty that can be consumed raw or industrialized, rich in protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins and Selenium. In Brazil, the largest producers of the Brazil nuts are the states of Para, Amazonas, Acre and Rondonia. The trade of secular chestnut constitutes the only one where seeds are collected almost exclusively on natural forests and traded internationally. There are few areas cultivated with the Brazil nut in the country, of which we highlight the agroforestry systems (AFS) in the city of Tome-Acu (PA), a large-scale monoculture in Itacoatiara (AM) and some banks and / or germplasm collections in units of Embrapa in the North and companies.
