Automotive oxygen sensor is the heart of the vehicle's ECU. It is used to detect the oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas. The data measured is converted into an electrical signal that ECU uses to control the fuel injection and adjust the air-fuel ratio(AFR) for optimum combustion efficiency and the harmful exhaust gases (such as CO,HC and NOx) minimization. So that we can realize reducing the pollution and improving fuel economy.----Bangzhong manufactures zirconia sensor (Picture 1). The basic element is a thimble-shaped section of electrolyte (Zirconia Oxide), which is called zirconia tube, flanked by a pair of thin microporous platinum electrodes on both sides (Picture 2). The inner electrode is exposed to the atmosphere, while the outer electrode is exposed to the exhaust gas.

Automotive Oxygen sensor without heater                 Automotive Oxygen sensor with heater                               Picture 1                                               Picture 2 Automotive oxygen sensor is situated in the exhaust pipe. A ceramic coating is been applied to the side of the electrode exposed to the exhaust gas. And a shield with slots covers the ceramic tube. This structure not only prevents contamination of the electrode surface by the exhaust gas, but also allows exhaust gas to make contact with the electrode.----An important property of the zirconia element is that it can conduct oxygen ions above a temperature of about 350°C.At operating temperature, oxygen ions are able to pass through the element and deposit a charge on the platinum electrode thus generating the voltage signal (Picture 3). Since the atmosphere side of the electrolyte is exposed to a higher concentration of ions than the exhaust side, the inner electrode becomes negative with respect to the outer electrode. This results in the production of a voltage that varies between zero and one volt depending upon the amount of oxygen contained in the exhaust gas. A lean exhaust (AFR is high) produces voltages less than 0.1V, while a rich exhaust (AFR is low) can generate as much as 1V (Picture 4).                                                      Picture 3                                                                       Picture 4
