At that time there were 2 competing formats, DVD-R and DVD+R. Each format was supported by different companies. There are still 2 different formats today, but the vast majority of DVD recorders are called hybrid drives. This means they can accept, record and play either format. It is more common to find consumer DVD recorders which are meant for the home entertainment setup will still support one of the formats, DVD-R or DVD+R. Consumer DVD recorders are sometimes called standalone recorders because they are not installed in a computer.
