Here is how our self-watering pots works:

This kind of self-watering pot has a black net filter inside at the bottom of the pot to separate the water and the solid. This filter will leave a certain room for water storage at the bottom of the pot, and keeps the solid upon the water. And the solid in the water absorbing holes would absorb the water from the water storage room itself when it is not watered for a long time. The bottom hole could release the extra water when it is raining or watered too much. And a stopper would keep the water from running out of the pot if necessary. The filter could keep a good water balance for the solid and benefit the plants growing on the pot.
