D-Xylose or wood sugar is an obtained from plants rich in hemicelluloses, such as sawdust, rice straw and corn cobs. It can be dissolved in hot ethanol and pyridine easily. Its sweetness is 67% of sucrose. Xylose has similar chemical properties to glucose, and it can be reduced to corresponding alcohol, i.e. xylitol, or oxidized into 3-hydroxy glutarate.
Xylose is the main material for the production of xylitol in China, and xylose was approved as a non-calorific sweetener by several countries.
