1.Character:
1.β-Carotene obtained through crystallization in benzoic alcohol is prune hex-prism crystal; that obtained through crystallization in ligarine is red square blade crystal, melting point 181~182°C, soluble in CS2, benzene and trichloromethane, slightly soluble in ethylether, ligarine, hexane and vegetable oil, and slightly soluble in carbinol and ethanol, insoluble in water, acid and alkali, and yellow dilute solution.β-Carotene is air, heat and light sensitive, and particularly solution sensitive, and is prone to oxidation in air and then turns into achromatic and inactive oxidation products.
2. Carotenoids are the pigments that give color fruits and vegetables such as carrots, pumpkins, apricots, or mangoes, and dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli..
They cannot be made in the body and must be obtained in the diet.
2.Functions :
Beta-Carotene is converted into vitamin A in the body, and it is the most important source of provitamin A in food. It is also acts as an antioxidant together with vitamins E and C and may reduce risk of certain chronic diseases. beta-Carotene also plays an important role in protecting skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation.
3.Usage:
1. Food Additive
Besides caducity resistance and immunity improvement, β-Carotene is also an important pigment and confirmed as A nutritious food additive by Food Addition Agent Expert Consortium of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) and approved for application by 52 countries and regions. Its demand on international market exceeds 1000 tons with 10~15% annual growth rate. It can be used as intensifying agent for lipid foods such as margarine, salad oil and benne oil to help β-Carotene absorption by human body.
2. Forage Additive
Improve growth rate and flesh quality of animals, reproductivity of cattle, horse and pig, color and luster of red fish and shrimp, and darken color of bird’s egg.
