There may be 5 to 7 seats on the Blackjack table but the game will begin when there is at least one player. When vacant seats are available players can sit down. When you go to sit down on a Blackjack table do not look for open seats but for open betting spaces, as people can play several hands at once and even though there may be seats open there game may be closed if a players or players are playing several hands.
The cards are dealt clockwise, so the player directly left of the dealer will get the first cards. This spot on the Blackjack table is referred to as the first baseman. The player opposite the first baseman directly to the dealer's right is the player that will receive their cards last and is referred to as the third baseman or the anchorman.
Most experienced Blackjack players prefer to sit at the third baseman position or one seat to the right of the third baseman. They prefer to sit in this area because they can view the other hands in the game before they make their decision on what to do. If you are new to the game of Blackjack you should not sit in the third baseman seat. It is a seat where a lot of pressure is involved, as you may draw a card and make the dealer a winner. You can also take a hit that would have made the dealer bust. Other players may get upset at you for doing this, especially if you are a beginner and should not have hit. As you become a better player try to sit near or at the third baseman's seat, as you can get more information by being the last player to act.
