How to Lay Stepping Stones When Gardening

You can use stepping stones to create a natural-looking walkway through your outdoor landscape. There are many materials you can choose from when you lay the stepping stones and create a functional path around your garden. Use large pieces of flagstone or manufactured stepping stones to create an inviting garden path and one that can easily accommodate such gardening equipment as a wheelbarrow. Laying stones is a fun way to showcase your gardening and draw your visitors outdoors.Step 1

Use stepping stones that are at least 2-inches thick. Thinner stones could crack over time. Measure the space where you plan to lay the stones with a tape measure--this will help you decide how many stones you will need.

 

Step 2

Lay the stepping stones in the desired location and pattern. They should be close enough together so anyone walking over the path can easily step from one stone to the next.

 

Step 3

Use a garden trowel to cut down the sod or dirt around each stepping stone. Create a trench for each stone. Move the stone out of the area and remove the sod and soil where the stone will rest. The depth needs to be at least the thickness of each stepping stone.

 

Step 4

Smooth out the excavated space and level out the ground by patting down the dirt. Use a carpenter's level to make sure the ground is level and make any necessary adjustments.

 

Step 5

Insert the stepping stone into the space. It should be flush with the surrounding surface. Repeat this process until you have the desired stepping stone design.
