                         Calibration Method.

     Ethylene oxide Monitors were calibrated by exposing them to known concentrations of ethylene oxide in air, and measuring their response and recovery times. Ambient air was pumped through a bed of activated carbon(coconut charcoal, 6-12 mesh, Fisher C277)and then into an AID Model 350 Standards generator. A known concentration of ethylene oxide in air was generated from a permeation tube in a chamber in the apparatus maintained at 30 celcius. A VICI metronics ethylene oxide permeation tube, with a permeation rate of about 790 nanograms/minute/cm was used. The actual permeation rate was measured by weight loss( to+/- 0.1 milligram) over a sufficiently long period of time to give significant weight loss.

     For instrument calibrations the diluent and chamber flow rates were adjusted to generate the desired target gas composition. Three to six hundred(300-600) ml/minute of this gas was delivered to the calibration cap.

      The calibration gas stream, could be added to, or shut off from, the diluent gas stream when required, with a solenoid actuated value on the instrument. This feature permitted convenient exposure of the instrument to a clean air stream or one containing ethylene oxide. The meter responses were logged then loaded on a PC and printed.
