Also known as the split hopper barge, it is an advanced barge for freighting, loading and unloading.

The principle of work:

The barge is composed of two hulls symmetrical in longitude, which can be rotated respectively on its own hinge axis.

When the barge is loaded with dredged sediment, the weight of the two empty hulls and the load on them add up to the total weight.

Then, the gravity center of each hull is on the inner side of the buoyant center, closer to the midship longitudinal section than the buoyant center such as to generate an opening moment to each hull.

Consequently, the hulls begin the sediment disposal under the joint forces of the start-stop hydro-cylinder and the opening moment. After the sediment disposal, the barge loses the weight of sediment and the gravity center of each hull becomes the general gravity center of the barge.

And then, the gravity center of each hull is on the outer side of the buoyant center, further to the midship longitudinal section than the buoyant center such as to generate a closing moment to each hull. Under the joint forces of the closing moment and the start-stop hydro-cylinder, the hulls draw automatically close to each other until completely closed.
