Coarse-crystal calcite (e.g. spar) as a rule leads to disintegration of the stone during burning. Broken quicklime fragments uncontrollably alter the air resistance of the feed, complicate kiln management and impair the quality of the quicklime.During calcination, CO2 must be able to exit freely from the limestone in order to obtain complete decompostion of the stone. If limestone are coated with mud or clay, a vitreous sinter skin may form around the pieces during burning, hindering or preventing escape of the CO2.
