Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic isolated from the soil microorganism Streptomyces orientalis. Since the 1950s it has been given primarily to treat severe infections caused by gram-positive organisms.Its administration has increased due to the emergence of methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
