Column is at the heart of chromatographic system. Because of different distribution coefficients in two phases, each fraction in the sample has different movement speed. With the process of adsorption and desorption, they are separated from each other. The columns are commonly filled with porous silica or packing materials based on silica such as C4, C8, C18 etc.
