Spherical roller bearings are of separable design; the shaft washer with roller and cage assembly, and the housing washer can be mounted independently of each other.
Spherical roller thrust bearings incorporate a large number of asymmetrical rollers and have specially designed raceways with an optimum conformity. They can therefore support very heavy axial loads and also permit relatively high speed operation.
Spherical roller thrust bearings are produced in two designs depending on size and series. Bearings identified by the designation suffix E have a pressed steel window-type cage which forms a non-separable assembly with the rollers and shaft washer. All other bearings (no designation suffix, and those E-design bearings identified by suffix EM or EF) have a machined cage of brass which is guided by a sleeve held in the shaft washer bore. The shaft washer, cage and rollers form a non-separable unit.
If bearings of earlier design with machined cage, where the axial forces were transmitted via the cage-guiding sleeve, are to be replaced by E-design bearings.
Misalignment:
Because of their design, spherical roller thrust bearings are self-aligning, they permit errors of alignment of the shaft relative to the housing, and a certain degree of shaft bending has no effect on the bearing.
Under normal loads (Fa +2.7 Fr ≤ 0.05 Co), rotating shaft washer and constant misalignment, the following angular misalignments can be permitted.
