Beeswax 

 

Beeswax is a major bee product and can be used in various ways.  Industrially it is used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and textiles.  Other uses include beekeeping industry, candle making and leather industry.  

 

Cosmetic Industry:

 

Beeswax is a major ingredients in the preparation of beauty soaps, creams, ointments, lipsticks, lotions, nail polish, rouge and eye pencils. 

 

Leather Industry:

Threads used for sewing shoes or other leather articles are often coated with beeswax for lubrication and durability. 

Beekeeping industry:

Beeswax is used in making comb foundation and queen cups.  When applied on top bars it acts as a bee attractant.

Textile Industry:

Beeswax is used for designing desired patterns on clothes e.g. batik (kitenge).

 

Candle Making:

 

This is the largest use of beeswax as a raw material. Candles made of beeswax burn longer, have a nice aroma and are environmentally friendly. 

 

Food Preservative:

 

Beeswax can be used to protect cheese and some fruits from moulding and further drying. 

 

Other uses:

 

Beeswax is also used in chewing gums, inks, electric insulators and adhesives, floor and furniture polishes, grafting, carbon papers, waterproofing and crayons.
